Sexual Orientations

Sexual identities are very personal and vary from person to person. The information in this section is a general guide to some LGBT+ community terms.

When dealing with these terms it is important to remember that gender identity, romantic attraction and sexuality are independent of each other.

Some of these terms can be used in a derogatory way and care must be taken when speaking to someone about their sexuality. It is always best practice to ask the person which terms they prefer.

  • Abrosexual

    A person who has a fluid and/or rapidly-changing identity that fluctuates between different sexualities.

  • Aceflux

    A form of grey-asexuality whereby a person's experience of sexual attraction varies over time.

  • Acespike

    A form of grey-asexuality whereby a person feels random spikes of sexual attraction.

  • Acosexual

    A person who experiences sexual attraction that one wants to act on, but simultaneously has a strong aversion to act upon it due to bad experiences, apprehension, or other misgivings about sex.

  • Aegosexual
    Aegosexual

    Some asexual people can be aroused by or masturbate to sexual situations or material, without experiencing attraction to those involved in the situation and without a desire to be personally involved in the situation.

  • Agensexual

    An asexual person who is repulsed by genitalia.

  • Akoisexual

    A person who experiences attraction but does not want it reciprocated or lose it when it is reciprocated. Used as an alternative and potentially less problematic form of lithosexual/lithoromantic.

  • Aliquasexual

    A person who does not normally feel attraction, but can feel it on occasion under specific circumstances.

  • Allosexual

    A person who experiences sexual attraction. A term used most commonly in the asexual community to refer to someone who is not asexual.

  • Amicussexual

    A person who only experiences sexual attraction towards established friends. A subsection of demisexual.

  • Androgynosexual

    A person who is sexually attracted to both men and women, specifically to those with androgynous appearances.

  • Androphilia

    A person who is sexually attracted to men or masculinity regardless of their gender identity.

  • Androsexual

    A person who is attracted to masculinity or male anatomy, regardless of whether the object of one's affection identifies as a man.

    A person who is attracted only to those who are not menstruating. In some extreme cases, antihaemosexuals may only be attracted to people who never menstruate, or who have never menstruated at all.

    A person who only has sexual attraction for someone after another form of attraction has been felt (romantic, sensual, platonic, etc.).

    A person who feels as though they lost the ability to feel sexual attraction because of trauma. Controversial.

  • Caligosexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction that, in their mind, is very weak or vague, almost nonexistent. Seen within the asexual spectrum.

  • Cassexual

    A person who feels their sexual orientation seems to have no serious meaning in your everyday life.

  • Ceasesexual

    A person who feels a type of attraction, but occasionally has their attraction completely disappear for a period of time before it returns.

  • Cetrosexuality

    A gender non-binary person who only feels sexual attraction towards those whose gender also doesn't fit in the gender binary.

  • Comsexual

    A person who experiences sexual attraction. Ideal for someone who feels they belong in the LGBT+ community, but is unsure of where exactly they stand. It's a more specific way of saying you don't belong to the asexual spectrum.

  • Cupiosexual

    A person who doesn't experience sexual attraction but desires a sexual relationship.

    A person who dissociates on a regular basis during sex and/or sex like activities, often leaving the individual confused with what their sexual attraction is (or lack thereof).

    A person who is willing/able to give a certain amount of affection/action, but, similar to akoi- one would tend to refuse any reciprocation of those actions. Controversial.

  • Dreadsexual

    A person whose sexual orientation fluctuates from feeling no attraction to feeling attraction. When sexual attraction is felt, it is accompanied by a strong feeling of dread or anxiety.

  • Duosexual
    Duosexual

    A person who feels as though they bounce between two specific sexual orientations (such as: bisexual and demisexual).

  • Dwinsexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction to most people in their life. However, once they develop a powerful bond with someone, the attraction fades. Term is very similar to fraysexual.

    A person who is gynesexual yet identifies as being attracted to femininity or the female anatomy, regardless of whether the object of one's affection identifies as a woman.

    A person predominantly heterosexual but not exclusively so.

    A person sexually attracted to people of the opposite sex.

    A person who desires to have sexual actions performed on themselves, but not on others. Opposite of placiosexual.

    A term used to represent a homosexual homoromantic female who dresses and acts in a stereotypically masculine manner.

  • Lesbian, Labrys

    Lesbians, women, and feminism, and gynephilic people who identify as female. Labrys became a symbol of lesbians and feminists due to the popularity of a female empowerment publication called Labrys Magazine.

  • Lesbian, Lipstick

    A feminine lesbian who is attracted to other feminine lesbians. They generally enjoy fashion, flowers, perfume, sex and the city, lingerie, lipstick of course, and (gasp!) passionate sex with other women.

  • Limnosexual

    A person who experiences sexual attraction only when exposed to audio, visual and/or written forms of sex or sex-like activities. However, when it comes to the "real world", there is no sexual attraction. Found in the asexual community.

  • Lithsexual

    A person who experiences sexual attraction but does not desire reciprocation for their attraction.

  • Mollsexual

    A person whose sexual orientation is weak or soft in its presence.

  • Morosexual

    A person who is sexually attracted to those with a lower level of intelligence.

  • Myrsexual

    A person who believes their sexual orientation is fluid, though only within the asexual spectrum orientations.

  • Neusexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction only for those who don't believe they have a gender. Controversial.

  • Noetisexual

    A person who is sexually attracted to how someone else's mind operates. This does not necessarily mean the person is "intelligent". Examples could be for reasons like: creativity, philosophical opinions, things of this nature.

  • Nofesexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction to everyone but those who are feminine. Controversial.

  • Nomasexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction towards any gender other than male.

  • Nominsexual

    A person who experiences sexual attraction to everyone but those who are masculine. Found in polysexual community. Controversial.

  • Novisexual

    A person who feels as though their sexual attraction is too complicated to pin down to one word.

  • Omnisexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction towards anyone regardless of gender or human identity.

  • Pansexual

    Sexually attracted to many types of people, without regard to biological sex, gender, or gender identity.

  • Paragreysexual

    A person who feels the term 'greysexual' is very close to defining their own sexual identity, but the person still might feel a little unsure or anxious about their identity. This is within the asexual spectrum /community.

  • Paraidemsexual

    A person who feels the term 'gay' or 'lesbian' is very close to defining their own sexual identity, but the person still might feel a little unsure or anxious about their identity.

  • Parasexual

    Having sexual aspects but not involving full sexual relations.

  • Penultisexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction to all genders/sexes except their own. Found in the polysexual community.

  • Placiosexual

    A person wanting to give sexual pleasure to others, but preferably not having it reciprocated.

  • Polysexual

    Involving or characterised by different sexualities; sexually attracted to more than one gender.

  • Pomosexual

    Relating to a person who does not wish his or her sexuality to be put into a conventional category

  • Pothisexual

    A person who, like asexuality, feels no sexual attraction to anyone, regardless of gender, although they are still sex-positive.

  • Presexual

    Preceding or not yet influenced by sexual activity, awareness, or development; prepubertal.

  • Proculsexual

    A person who has sexual attraction for those they know they can never actually be with (fictional characters, celebrities, etc.)

    A feminine person who experiences sexual attraction for other feminine individuals only.

  • Quoisexual

    A person who does not know where they fit on the spectrum, or not identifying with any existing label.

  • Reciprosexual

    A person who experiences attraction only after realising someone is attracted to them.

  • Repulssexual
    Repulssexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction, but is repulsed by sexual activities. A more specific version of arcsexual, but not applicable to asexuals who are sex-repulsed.

  • Requiessexual
    Requiessexual

    A person who experiences limited or no attraction/interest/activity due to some form of emotional exhaustion.

  • Sapiosexual
    Sapiosexual

    A person who finds intelligence sexually attractive or arousing.

  • Sapphic

    Relating to lesbians (= women who are sexually attracted to other women)

  • Skoliosexual

    A person who is sexually and/or romantically attracted to non-binary individuals.

  • Somnisexual

    A person who has sexual attraction only for people in their dreams. When awake, they do not have sexual attraction for anyone. Controversial.

  • Speciosexual

    A person who experiences sexual attraction based on traits that are not gender identity and/or sex-related (ex: hair colour, body part, etc.)

  • Tempsexual

    A person who believes that their sexual orientation changes, depending on what time of day it is (night vs day, evening vs daybreak, etc.) Sub-section to abrosexual. Controversial.

  • Thymsexual
    Thymsexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction, but the direction of the attraction changes depending on their emotional state of being.

  • Trisexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction to three sexes and/or gender identities, found in the polysexual community.

  • Uncadesexual
    Uncadesexual

    A person who extremely rarely experiences sexual attraction, but when they do, it lasts for a very long time (typically around a year or longer). Found in greysexual umbrella. Pronounced "un-kay-dee-sexual".

  • Uniattraction
    Uniattraction

    A person who feels attraction towards one person and one person only for advanced periods of time or one's whole lifetime. They are attracted to that one person regardless of their gender/sexuality/changing appearance etc.

  • Vapubsexual

    An asexual person who is repulsed by genitalia. Pink is for femininity, blue is for masculinity, red is for passion, white X means lacking. Pronounced 'vay-pub-sexual'.

  • Vexesexual

    A person who believes they belong under the asexual umbrella, but unsure where.

  • Voltisexual

    A person who feels sexual attraction, but doesn't feel it towards anyone in particular. Can be seen within the greysexual community.

  • Xumsexual

    A person who is never satisfied with their sexual orientation due to constant self-doubt or identity issues, although xumsexual is specific for neurodivergent people.
