Gender Identities

Gender identities are very personal and vary from person to person. The information in this section is a general guide to some LGBT+ community terms.

When dealing with these terms it is important to remember that gender identity, romantic and sexuality are independent of each other.

Some of these terms can be used in a derogatory way and care must be taken when speaking to someone about their gender identity. It is always best practice to ask the person which terms they prefer.

  • Abimegender
    Abimegender

    A person whose gender is profound, deep, and infinite; meant to resemble when one mirror is reflecting into another mirror creating an infinite paradox.

  • Absoregender

    A person whose gender changes to conform to the genders of those around them.

  • Abussogender
    Abussogender

    A person who feels their gender identity is completely incomprehensible. Similar to anongender. Synonymous with staticgender.

  • Accipiogender
    Accipiogender

    A person who was born and grew up without the imposition of gender roles (with gender neutral parenting), and who may or may not identify themselves with some gender(s) later on.

  • Adamasgender

    A person whose gender refuses to be categorised.

  • Aerogender
    Aerogender

    A person who believes their gender identity is determined by environmental and/or external factors (time of day, seasons, weather, specific people near you, etc.). Controversial.

  • Affigogender

    A person who was raised with an assigned and imposed gender.

  • Agender
    Agender

    A person who is "without gender". It can be seen either as a non-binary gender identity or as a statement of not having a gender identity.

  • Agenderflux

    A person who has a “base gender” of agender, bit can also fluctuate to and from masculine and/or feminine genders.

  • Alexigender

    A person who feels like they are genderfluid, but unsure of what specific genders they fluctuate between.

  • Aliagender

    A person who feels their gender identity is completely different from "traditional" ways of describing gender (femininity vs masculinity). They believe they have a gender, but nothing within the contemporary gender spectrum seems like the "right" fit.

  • Aliusgender

    A person who feels as though their gender identity cannot be described by "stereotypical" gender descriptors.

  • Amaregender

    A person who feels their gender changes depending on who they are in love with. A form of genderfluidity.

  • Ambigender

    A person who feels as though they have the soul of a woman AND a man inside of them. It is a term for those who do not feel comfortable using the term "two-spirit" for any reason (such as not having American indigenous blood).

  • Ambonec

    A person who feels as though they are simultaneously a girl and a boy, as well as neither. Similar to the concept of "schrodinger's cat", synonymous with Schrodi Gender.

  • Amorgender

    A person who feels their gender changes whilst in the presence of an individual to whom they have developed a deep connection. A form of genderfluidity.

  • Androfluid

    A person who feels their gender is fluid between multiple masculine identities. Sub-community of genderfluid.

  • Androgynous
    Androgynous

    A person who feels partly male and partly female in appearance; of indeterminate sex

  • Angenital

    A person who feels uncomfortable with their genitalia (wanting to be sexless), but does not mind gendered pronouns (he/she/they/etc.).

  • Anongender

    A person whose gender that is unknown to oneself and others.

  • Anvisgender
    Anvisgender

    A person who feels apathetic towards their gender identity. Synonymous with Cassgender.

  • Apogender
    Apogender

    A person who feels not only genderless but entirely removed from the concept of gender.

  • Aporagender
    Aporagender

    A non-binary gender identity and umbrella term for "a gender separate from male, female, and anything in between (unlike Androgyne) while still having a very strong and specific gendered feeling" (that is, not an absence of gender or agender).

  • Axigender
    Axigender

    A person whose gender consists of agender and another gender term. There is no overlap, and little-to-no transition between agender and the other gender. In the polygender community.

  • Bigender
    Bigender

    A person who feels their gender fluctuates/is fluid between two distinct genders. Found within the polygender and genderfluid community.

  • Bigenderfluid

    A person whose sense of personal identity encompasses two genders.

  • Bigenderflux

    A person whose gender is both two genders and fluctuating in intensity. This can occur in multiple ways.

  • Boyflux

    A person who feels mostly or completely male most of the time but experiences varying degrees of male identity. For example, one could feel 0% (agender), 50% (demiboy), 100% (male).

  • Brevigender
    Brevigender

    A type of genderfluid person who feels their specific gender identity changes very rapidly. Synonymous with Veloxigender.

  • Camius Gender
    Camius Gender

    A person who feels a strong warmth and a strong connection to multiple genders (at least two) or none at all and identifies with feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

  • Cancegender
    Cancegender

    A person who feels they are primarily agender. However, they also feel their gender is fluid. Alternative name: Agenderfluid.

  • Cassgender

    A person who feels their gender identity is unimportant (and/or feel indifferent towards their gender identity). Synonymous with Anvisgender.

  • Ceterogender

    A person whose gender is non-binary with specific feminine, masculine, or neutral feelings.

  • Chaosgender

    A person who feels their gender is too confusing to pin down to one term, sub-community of novigender.

  • Cisgender
    Cisgender

    A person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex.

  • Cobblogender
    Cobblogender

    A person who partially identifies male but doesn't conform to male gender roles. They could also partially identify as female but not conform to female gender roles.

  • Comgender
    Comgender

    An umbrella term for anything not related to agender. Can be used as an individual identity for those who believe they don't identify as agender.

  • Conigender

    A person whose gender identity is completely dependent on external circumstances. For example: They might feel like a girl only with specific people or specific circumstances around them (same goes for "feeling like a boy" or non-binary).

  • Crystagender

    A person who feels as though their gender identity fluctuates between parts of different gender identities. A subsection of genderfluid.

  • Demiboy

    A person whose gender identity is only partly male, regardless of their assigned gender at birth.

  • Demifluid

    A non-binary gender identity that is partially fluid and part static. This is different from genderfluid and demiflux

  • Demiflux
    Demiflux

    A person whose gender identity is one part is static, and the other(s) fluctuate(s) in intensity. For example, the static side could be female, but the other side could be male.

  • Demigender

    An umbrella term for non-binary gender identities that have a partial connection to a certain gender.

  • Demigirl

    A person who partially identifies as a woman or with feminine characteristics.

  • Drag/Feather

    A term applied to clothing and makeup worn on special occasions for performing or entertaining,Drag performance includes overall presentation and behaviour in addition to clothing and makeup

  • Eafluid

    A person who feels their gender is fluid between multiple non-binary genders. Sub-community of genderfluid.

  • Egender

    A person who refuses to identify within the gender spectrum. Similar to Aliagender, Videgender, and Nescio Gender.

  • Egogender

    A person whose gender can only be defined by oneself, and is similar to gender nihilism, Max Stirner's philosophy of egoism, and the creative nothing (also related to Stirner's philosophy). It is a unique gender, and an individualistic gender.

  • Equigender

    A person who feels as though they have multiple genders, but they're all in equal amounts. Found in the polygender umbrella.

  • Erotogender
    Erotogender

    A person whose gender or genders are felt specifically under sexual circumstances, felt specifically in sexual contexts, different to what is generally felt in other contexts and situations.

  • Exgender

    A person whose gender identity cannot be described ("is beyond") the gender spectrum.

  • Exploragender

    A person who constantly questions their gender identity, feeling as though one gender term in particular in never quite right. Similar to: Anongender, Staticgender, and Abussosgender.

  • Faesari

    A person who feels most comfortable within the gender neutral spectrum, but still feels a strong attachment to femininity. This is similar to the idea of “fegender” (non-binary with emphasis on femininity). Pronounced “fay-sar-ee”

  • Fegender

    A person who is non-binary but feels strong connections to femininity.

  • Fluidflux

    A person whose gender identity moves between two or more genders and also fluctuates in intensity. Sometimes described as the combination of both genderfluid and genderflux identities.

  • Fractalgender

    A person who believes their gender is infinitely complex in nature (like a fractal), but their identity repeats itself in multiple facets of their being.

  • Frigus gender

    A person who feels a strong chilliness and a strong connection to multiple genders (at least two) or none at all and identifies with feeling cold and blue inside.

  • Gemigender

    A person who feels they have two opposing gender identities at once (Such as: agender and comgender; demigirl and demiboy, etc.). Found in polygender community.

  • Gender Non-Binary

    Denoting or relating to a gender or sexual identity that is not defined in terms of traditional binary oppositions such as male and female or homosexual and heterosexual.

  • Gender-Fluid

    Denoting or relating to a person who does not identify themselves as having a fixed gender.

  • Genderfae

    A form of genderfluidity that never encompasses feeling masculine. This is different from the binary gender female because it may include genders other than male and female (aporagender).

  • Genderfaun

    A form of genderfluidity that never encompasses feeling femininity. It can include male and any non-binary gender, but never encompasses feeling female

    A person who is genderflux experiences a range of intensity within a gender identity. For example, a person who is boyflux may identify as fully masculine to partially masculine (demiboy) and slightly masculine (libramasculine) to fully agender. Gende...

    A person who feels as though they have no gender.

  • Gendernull

    A person who is unsure of their gender identity, but feels like agender is extremely close to their gender feelings.

  • Genderqueer

    Denoting or relating to a person who does not subscribe to conventional gender distinctions but identifies with neither, both, or a combination of male and female genders.

  • Gendervariant

    An umbrella term for those who don't identify as cisgender, genderqueer is synonymous.

  • Girlflux

    A person who feels mostly or completely female most of the time but experiences varying degrees of female identity, despite their biological sex. For example, one could feel 0% (agender), 50% (demigirl), 100% (female).

  • Greygender

    A person who identifies as (at least partially) outside the gender binary and has a strong natural ambivalence about their gender identity or gender expression.

  • Gynefluid

    A person who feels their gender is fluid between multiple feminine-based genders, sub-community of genderfluid.

  • Hemi-non-binary

    A person who feels like they are half a boy, half something else.

  • Hemiboy

  • Hemigirl

    A person who feels like they are half one gender, half something else.

  • Hermaphrodite

    A person or animal having both male and female sex organs or other sexual characteristics, either abnormally or (in the case of some organisms) as the natural condition.

    A person who feels they have a masculine gender identity, but it feels like wearing a mask (instead of feeling a deep sense of connection to it).

    A person who feels they have a feminine gender identity, but it feels like wearing a mask (instead of feeling a deep sense of connection to it).

    A person who feels they are never quite sure of their gender identity.

  • Intersex

    The condition of having both male and female sex organs or other sexual characteristics.

  • Intricargender

    A person who is fascinated or intrigued by a gender identity, but knows they don't actually identify with said gender (used as a "tag-on" gender). Word composed of latin root for "intrigue" and "gender".

  • Juxera

    Juxera is a gender identity created on Tumblr. It can be described as being feminine but not a female, like a girl but not a girl.

  • Lamingender

    A person who feels their gender identity has multiple layers. Part of the polygender community.

  • Librafeminine

    A person who experiences little attachment to being feminine/female, but mostly agender.

  • Librafluid

    A person who feels mostly agender, but has a strong connection that fluctuates between other genders. It is similar to genderfluid, but with the aspect that it is mostly agender.

  • Libramasculine

    A person who experiences little attachment to being masculine/male, but mostly agender.

    A person who connects strongly with being non-binary, and slightly as another gender. Maginon-binary is similar to Deminon-binary, but is more specific.

  • Magiboy

    A person whose gender identity gender identity connects strongly with being masculine/male, and slightly as something else. Magiboy is similar to Demiboy, but is more specific.

  • MagiFluid

    A person whose gender identity changes between being a Magigirl, a Magiboy, and Maginon-binary.

  • Magigirl

    A person whose gender identity connects strongly with being feminine/female, and slightly as something else. Magigirl is similar to Demigirl, but is more specific.

  • Manugender

    A non-binary gender identity with strong connections to masculinity.

  • Maverique

    A non-binary gender identity characterised by autonomy regarding a sense of self that is entirely independent of male/masculinity, female/femininity or anything which derives from the two whilst still being neither without gender.

  • Minumgender

    A person who feels they are majority agender (75% of their gender identity), and the remaining 25% is some other gender. Sub-section of demigender.

  • Multiflux

    An umbrella term that represents all fluctuating genders under the subcategory of genderflux that can contain multiple genders. This term is similar in meaning to the umbrella term multigender,

  • Murargender

    A person who feels they are never the same gender twice. A type of gender fluidity.

  • Mutogender

    A person whose gender identity changes, depending on the type of situation with which they are involved. It is a more specific type of genderfluid.

  • Necrogender

    A person who believes their gender existed in the past, but is no longer in existence in the present. This could be due to: trauma, life altering events, etc. Controversial.

  • Nesciogender

    A person whose gender that is unknown to themselves, due to some sort of mental disability (and/or illness) that makes the concept of gender difficult to understand. Similar to Videgender.

  • Neurogender

    An umbrella term to describe when someone's gender is somehow linked to their neurotype, mental illness, or neurological conditions. There are many different neurogenders related to most, if not all, neurodivergencies.

  • Neutrois

    A person who identifies as genderless, neither male nor female. They may be celibate or sexual of any orientation.

  • Neutroisflux

    A person who feels they do have a gender and experience a gender (as opposed to Agender people who feel they do not have a gender) but one that is neutral. A combination of Neutrois and Genderflux.

  • Nonbinaryflux

    A person who fluctuates between being non-binary and being a trans man or trans woman. A type of genderfluidity and a subset of genderflux that refers to a group of people that identify as both binary transgender and non-binary.

  • Nonpuella

    A person who physically is not feminine (their sex or body's characteristics), but feels a strong connection to femininity.

  • Nonpuer

    A person who physically is not masculine (their sex or body's characteristics), but feels a strong connection to masculinity.

  • Novigender

    A person who feels as though their gender identity is too complicated to pin down to one word.

  • Pangender

    A person whose gender is non-binary, and refers to a wide multiplicity of genders that can (or not) tend to the infinite (meaning that this experience can go beyond the current knowledge of genders).

  • Periboy

    A person whose gender identity is not currently known, but is becoming clearer over time. A transitional identity. Not to be confused with Paragender.

  • Perifluid

    A person whose gender identity is not currently known, but is becoming clearer over time. A transitional identity. Not to be confused with Paragender.

    A person who identifies with a gender but not as a gender. Similar in definition to paragender and offgender.

  • Perigirl

    A person whose gender identity is not currently known, but is becoming clearer over time. A transitional identity. Not to be confused with Paragender.

  • Polygender

    A person who feels they have three distinct genders. A subform of polygender.

  • Proxvir

    Proxvir is a gender created on Tumblr. It's similar to boy and isn't connected to the binary, standing by itself. It can be encapsulated in the phrases "boyish, but not boy" and "masculine, but not male."

  • Puzzlegender

    A person who feels their gender is pieced together or needs to be pieced together.

  • Quadgender

    A person who feels like they have four distinct genders. A sub-form of polygender.

  • Quasigender

    A person who feels mostly like one gender or set of genders, but not entirely. It can also mean a person feels comfortable with a certain gender identity within or apart from the binary.

  • Quintgender

    A person who feels like they have five distinct genders. A subform of polygender.

  • Quoigender

    A person who understands the concepts of gender and gender identity, but believes they could never be apply to themselves. Connected to agender.

  • Schrodigender

    A person who feels they are simultaneously a girl and a boy, as well as neither, similar to the concept of "schrodinger's cat". Synonymous with ambonese.

  • Scorigender

    A person who feels they are fluid between three similar genders (such as: three feminine genders, three masculine genders, or three non-binary genders). Part of the genderfluid community.

  • Selenogender

    A subsection of genderfluid, where the times you shift are constant (example: 1 month 1 gender, another 1 month a difference gender; 2 hours 1 gender, 2 hours another gender, etc.).

  • Staticgender

    A person who feels their gender is incomprehensible.

  • Synchogender
    Synchogender

    A person who believes their gender identity changes on a regular basis throughout the day, everyday. Similar to: brevigender, veloxigender, mutogender, and selenogender. A subset of genderfluid.

  • Tachigender

    A person who feels their gender changes quickly and on a regular basis.

  • Tetrisgender
    Tetrisgender

    A person whose gender identity builds up over time, but once they feel like they've completed their gender identity, it disappears. Just like in Tetris, where you build up blocks over time only to have the lines disappear.

  • Tinegender

    A person who believes their gender is fluid, but the change is so small/minute, that their overall identity does not change. Part of the genderfluid community.

  • Trans Masculine

    A transgender person who was assigned female at birth, but identifies with masculinity to a greater extent than femininity.

  • Transexual
    Transexual

    A person who emotionally and psychologically feels that they belong to the opposite sex.

  • Transgender

    Denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex.

  • Transneural

    An umbrella term for any gender identity that is not cisgender.

  • Trigender

    A person whose gender can be literally translated as "three genders" or "triple gender". Trigender people experience exactly three gender identities, either simultaneously or varying between them.

  • Triquiboy

    A person whose gender identity is similar to Demiboy but is more of a fractal gender (infinitely intricate).

  • Two-Spirit

    Two Spirit is a third gender found in some Native American cultures, often involving birth-assigned men or women taking on the identities and roles of the opposite sex. A sacred and historical identity, Two Spirit can include but is by no means limited...

  • Ultigender

    A pocket gender with an estimated 50-100 members identifying as part of this community. Although this gender is not officially recognised by the LGBT+ community it entails an important, yet select, part of the non-binary gender community.

  • Vapogender

    A person whose gender feels like smoke; can be seen on a shallow level but once you go deeper, it disappears and you are left with no gender and only tiny wisps of what you thought it was.

  • Veloxigender

    A person who feels genderfluid, but their genderfluidity moves too quickly to put a name to the individual gender identity feels that are felt. A subsection of genderfluid.

  • Verangender
    Verangender

    A person whose gender is fluid and seems to shift/change the moment it is identified. The person can almost never grasp a gender, as it changes soon after it is recognised.

  • Vexegender

    A person who feels they are somewhere in the non-binary umbrella, but unsure of exactly where you belong, the concept of gender is difficult to grasp for individuals who identify as vexegender.

  • Videgender
    Videgender

    A person who does not see gender in a "traditional" way (femininity vs masculinity, or lack thereof), so they based the concept of gender identity on something like "aesthetics" or something that "has the same feelings" as one might describe something.

  • Virgender
    Virgender

    A person whose gender identity is practically and particularly genderless. This usually happens when it is too stressful or difficult to have a gender. A gender identity that feels weakened by stress, to the point where one is nearly genderless.

  • Vociboy
    Vociboy

    A person whose male identity is very weak, or can be described as being hollow.

  • Vocifluid
    Vocifluid

    A person whose gender varies over time and each gender can also feel weak or hollow.

  • Vocigender
    Vocigender

    A person whose gender is weak or hollow. It is almost similar in meaning to greygender, where the gender identity is weak, but vocigender can include a specific gender, like vocigirl, vocifluid, and vociboy.

  • Vocigirl

    A person whose female identity is very weak, or can be described as being hollow.

  • Voidfluid
    Voidfluid

    A person who feels their gender identity is fluid, but none of the genders experienced can be clearly distinguished as masculine, feminine, or neutral.

  • Xirl

    A person who identifies with some part of woman/girlhood but who wants a non-binary and neutral-sounding word because they aren't entirely girls or don’t want to be associated with the typical ideas brought up by the word “girl.”

  • Xoy

    A person who identifies with some part of man/boyhood but who wants a non-binary and neutral-sounding word because they aren't entirely boys or don’t want to be associated with the typical ideas brought up by the word “boy.”

  • xumgender

    A person who is never satisfied with their gender due to constant self-doubt or identity issues, causing one to compulsively search and seek out something that fits as perfect as possible though one will never be found due to one’s neurotype.
